So many people in N. America complain about Taxi service.  They say the drivers always go "the long route"  to "run the meter up".  Sometimes it's true.  Sometimes the drivers don't know the way to their destination.  People complain about having "Foreigners"  driving cab or running corner stores, but these are jobs that most N.Americans won't do because they don't want to work all night, and they don't like low paying, dangerous jobs.

The Pirates had lots of gold so they began to build permanent buildings.  But they were building directly on sandy, swampy soil.  And they built maybe only 1 metre above sea level.  They were rich so they built out of stone, instead of wood.   Gradually it became a city.  Black slaves ran away from their owners further north and began to live in New Orleans.  So New Orleans began as a city of people who were hiding from unjust laws.

         Over the centuries, the heavy stone buildings were sinking.  It was very slow, so no one noticed, except that they could notice that the shoreline was coming closer and closer to their buildings.  At the same time the Oceans were rising slowly (and they still are).  So the city of New Orleans built protective dams around the city, called levees, to protect their expensive buildings.

         Over the past 300 years, the levees have become higher and higher, and the city sank lower and lower below sea level.  So by the time Hurricane Katrina hit , New Orleans was 6 metres below sea level, protected only by concrete walls built on top of the levees.  They had powerful pumps to pump water out, but the pumps were also 6 metres below sea level.  So when the sea water broke through, the pumps  failed because they were under water, and diesel engines cannot run under water.

        It was a disaster waiting to happen.  There were not enough roads to get people out, and no major cities nearby with hotels for the people to go to.  Many of the poorest people (mostly black)  had no money to travel , nor to pay for motels etc, so they stayed in the city.  Many sick and elderly could not travel.  People in hospitals could not travel.  Now there is looting and lawlessness throughout.  People with guns are robbing anyone they can.  People are stealing everything they can from stores and banks.

        New Orleans is one of USA's most important Sea Ports.  So goods are going rotten in warehouses, coffee, fruit, meat, all going rotten and the temperature there is around 35 C and very humid.  The water from sewers is coming up and floating around on the streets.  Bodies of humans and animals are floating in this water.  People are walking around in this fetid water, so many will get diseases. 

ニューオリンズはアメリカのもっとも重要な港のひとつだ。だから品物は倉庫の中で腐って行く、コーヒー、果物、肉、全てが腐り、温度は３５度前後でとても湿気が高い。下水道の水は上がってきて、道路周辺に溢れている。人間や動物の死体がこの水に浮かんでいる。人々はこの悪臭のある水の中を歩いている、だから沢山の人たちが病気になるだろう。
