１ （日常生活の一般的な問題のほかは特に困ったこともなくスムースにいっているという場合）

"I'm getting by." うまく行ってるよ
２ （その日その日を何とか切り抜けるとか最低限の自己満足を持つ時の表現に使う場合）

smoke and mirrors ごまかし
少し前にデビッドと電話で話していた時にライブドアの問題を話していたら、この言葉が出てきました。 といっても粉飾決済（account-rigging, statements by window dressing.）などといった英語もその時は分からないし、難しい言い方ではなく（というより出来ず）、全く簡単な言い方で説明しました。 とにかく日本は今、不正な行為で莫大な利益を得て、一時は選挙に出馬したり、プロ野球チームを買おうとしたけど、今は刑務所にいる堀江という名前の男性のことが毎日ニュースにのぼっているといったようなことをたどたどしく話していた時に、デビッドがそれはsomoke and mirrors だと言っていました。このイディオムは一般的によく使われるそうです。ですから、粉飾決済という言葉が分からなくても彼の金儲けのやり方ははごまかしだった。 His way how to get money was smoke and mirror という表現でもなんとかなる便利な言葉ですね。
smoke and mirrors"というのはマジシャンが使うトリックの道具から来た言葉で、そこから「目をくらますもの」「巧みなごまかし」といったイディオムが生まれたのだそうです。
Politicians use "smoke and mirrors" to cover up the truth.
So "smoke and mirrors" can be said about any big cover
up.
