Actually, in N.America we usually say "hallway".（デビッドより）
実際には、北アメリカでは私たちはたいてい"hallway"と言います。

Technically hall is correct but a "hall" can also be a big room for example a wedding reception.  So we say hallway to be clear.

専門的には、"hall"　が正しいですが"hall"は例えば結婚式のような大きな部屋でもありうるため、私たちははっきりさせるために"hallway"と言います。


In England, New Zealand, Australia they say "passageway".  Once again passage is correct but it has other meanings.  For example in the movie "A Passage to India"   ....."passage" means "voyage"

英国、ニュージーランド、オーストラリアでは"passageway"と言います。"passage"は正しいですが、それは他の意味を持っています。たとえば、映画の"A Passage to India"のように"passage"は旅、航海などの意味があります。

Corridor is used for big buildings like schools, offices, hospitals. A corridor is a wide hallway.  Our teachers used to tell us "Now children, no running in the corridor". It has the same meaning in N.America and England, NZ and OZ.

Corridorは学校や、会社、病院などの大きな建物に使われます。Corridorは広い廊下です。我々の先生がよく”子供達は廊下で走ってはいけません”と言ったものです。それは北アメリカ、英国、ニュージーランドそしてオーストラリアでも同じ意味を持っています。


That's funny because the word "corridor" comes from the Latin word "corrir"  which means "to run"

面白いのは"corridor"と言う言葉が”走ること”と言う意味を持っているラテン語から来ている事です。

　階段の表現

What floor do you live on？　　何階に住んでいますか？      
I live on the third floor.　私は３階に住んでいます。

What floor is your office on?  　あなたのオフィスは何階にあるの？
It is on the ninetieth floor.　　それは90階です。



�A　story（storey）　　　建物の〜階という時

本の物語などのことをstory というのはもちろんですが、階もstory で表します。
story は建物全体を示すときに使われます。


I live in a seven storey building.
私は7階建てのビルに住んでます。


The tallest building in the world is in Taipei.  It is 120 stories. I work there.
世界で一番高いビルは台北にあります。　私はそこで働いています。



�B　level 　　　　時々デパートではfloor の代わりにlevelが使われる


店の案内表示版にはこのように書いてあります。

”sporting goods is on the Mezzanine level”　
スポーツ用品は中二階です。
とか
"men's shoe department is on the next level."
紳士用品は次の階です。

floor でもこのように使われる。

"children's clothing is on the third floor, men's shoe department  is on the
next floor up.
子供服は３階、紳士靴の売り場は次の階を上がったところにあります。

通りの数え方　street  addresses（街路アドレス）

少し前に大きな数字の数え方を載せましたが、今回は街路アドレスの言い方です。

その前にstreet と　avenue の違いの説明をします。
両方とも辞書を見ると、街路、通り、大通り、大街路、となっていて、その違いがさっぱり分かりません。
そこで、デビッドにその違いをあげてもらいました。



Streets run North -South, and Avenues run East- West
ストリートは南北に走る道路です。　 アヴェニューは東西に走る道路です。
（注：ニューヨークの場合は反対で、南北に走るのはアベニューで東西に走るのがストリートです）


In the past, Avenues were wider than Streets.  So in New York, for example, Park Avenue is wider that 5th street.   Also in the past, Streets were for businesses and Avenues were for residences.
過去においてアベニューはストリートより広かったのです。
ですから、ニューヨークではたとえば、パークアベニューはフィフィスストリートより、広いです。さらに過去において、ストリートはビジネスに、アベニューは住宅のためにありました。

Many cities number streets and avenues, but give names to important streets and avenues.
多くの都市はストリートとアベニューに番号をつけています。しかし大事な通りには名前をつけています。


Fifth Avenue is a famous shopping area.  Park avenue is the most expensive place to live in New York.  I think Broadway is an Avenue also.  Usually these important ones are wider, and more lights at night.
Second Avenue is also famous in New York.
5番街は有名なショッピング地域です。パークアベニューはニューヨークで生活するのにもっともお金のかかる場所です。ブロードウエイ通りもアベニューだと思います。　たいてい、それら大事な場所はより広く、そして夜はより多くの明かりがあります。


But that is not always the case today.  Still, generally Streets have more businesses and Avenues have more residences.  Also, sometimes Avenues have a divider in the middle of the road, called a boulevard.

Also inn Canada some cities Number most of their streets and avenues.

So, for example, in Calgary, one may be looking for 15237- 51st avenue.

In this case, we don't say "fifteen thousand, two hundred and thirty-seven.....fifty-first avenue.
この場合、私たちはfifteen thousand, two hundred and thirty-seven.....fifty-first avenue.と言ってはいけない。


Instead we alway say the last two digits together.  So 15237-51st avenue is spoken
その代わり、私たちは常に最後の2つの数字を一緒に言います。ですから 15237-51は


one fifty two, thirty seven .....fifty first ave


The reason we do this is so people can know that the house is in the 152nd block and it is lot number 37.
こうする理由は人々がこれは（51番アベニュー上の）152ブロックの中にあり、区画（ハウス）番号が37であることが分かるようにするためです。

But the number on the house would not be 37.  It would read 15237. 
しかし、家についている番号は37ではありません。　それは15237番となっているでしょう。


So as people are driving they can watch for numbers 149, 150, 151, then when they get into 152, they can look for the address 37.
