1　check out 　確かめる、　調べる

通常ホテルなど、手続きをして出る時、タイムレコーダーを押して退社する時に使われるのは一般的ですが、その他には下のような使われ方をします。 英訳：see what is happening, 　　get information 例文 �@There is a strange noise upstairs. Can you check it out? I'm afraid to go up there and see what it is. 上で変な音がするのよ。見てきてくれない？私、上に行って何なのか見るの恐いわ。 �AI'm going to check out the sale at the shoe store across the street. I need a pair of shoes. 通りの向こうで靴屋のセールがあるから行ってみるよ。靴が欲しいんだ。 注：訳では「行ってみる」、とか「見てみる」としましたが、要するに「ちょっと調べてみる」、とか（事実を）「確かめてみる」といった時に使われるんですね。 この場合の使い方のポイントとしては、目的語はunfamiliar （なじみの薄い、よく知らない）なことに使用されます。 I'm going to check out the airline schedule. 航空便の発着予定を調べてくるよ。 又は、I'm going to check the airline schedule out.

2　for good 　これを最後に、きっぱりと、永久に＝forever, always, permanently

例文1 I've tried to quit smoking many times. This time I'm quitting for good! I'm never going to smoke again! 私はなんども煙草をやめようとしてきました。今度はきっぱりとやめています。 私は二度と煙草吸うつもりはありません。 例文2 I like old cowboy movies and the life they show. It's too bad this kind of life is gone for good.. Today's cowboys don't just ride horses, they ride motor cycles! 私は古いカウボーイ映画と彼らが見せるその生活が好きでした。残念ですが、このような生活は永久になくなってしまいました。今日のカウボーイはまったく馬には乗りません。彼らはオートバイに乗ります。

3　scrath the surface　ほんの少しかじっただけ　　 (=learn only a little about something)

scratch は「ひっかく」　「はがし取る」　の意味があり、surface は「表面」なので　日本語の「ほんのすこしかじっただけ」　という言い方があてはまるのではないかと思います。 例文 I have been studying French for two years, but I've only scratched the surface of the language. There are many important rules and vocabulary that I stil not know. 2年間フランス語を勉強してきましたが、ほんの少ししか分かりません。 まだ私の知らない、重要なきまりと語彙が沢山あります。 scratch の例文 Be careful not to scratch yourself on the roses. バラでひっかかないように気をつけてください。

4 sort out　 （問題・けんかなど〉を処理する，解決する．（find a solusion to a problem)

例文 My teacher heloped me to sort out a problem I had at school. Everything is okey now. 先生は学校で私が持った問題を解決するのを助けてくれた。　今はすべて大丈夫だ。 この熟語の使用法 Jack sorted out the problem. Jack sorted the problem out. Jack sorted it out. The problem was sorted out.

5　go through 　探す又は調べる　＝search or examine something

例文　1　 After Vera's uncle died, she went through all of his papers, keeping some and throwing away others. ベラの叔父が死んだ後、彼女は彼の全ての書類を捜し、あるものは保存し他のものは捨てた。 例文　2 When the customs officers checked the car, they went through it very carefully, looking for drugs or guns. 税関の職員はその車を検査した時、彼らは麻薬や拳銃を探しながら、大変注意深く調べた。

6　on top of the world=feeling wonderful 　有頂天で、非常に幸福で

例文　　 Serena is getting married tomorrow. She is nervous but extremely happy. She is on top of the world. セレナは明日結婚することになっている。彼女は神経質になっているが、大変に幸福だ。 彼女は今有頂天だ。

7 out of charcter＝ unexpected 又は　unusual　似合わない、ふさわしくない

例文 Thresa was surprised when Jason started taking dance lessons. It was so out of character for him. He had always been shy and afraid of girls. テレサはジェイソンがダンスレッスンを受け始めた時、驚いた。それは彼らしくなかったから。 彼はいつも内気で女の子達を恐れていたから。

8　get rid of （嫌なことから）〜から抜け出す、〜を片付ける、〜を取り除く

例文 Anna has a problem, Tiny insects are eating her plants. She wants to get rid of these bugs but she doesn't know how to make them go away. アンナは困っている、小さな虫が彼女の植物を食べているので。彼女はそれらの虫を取り除きたいが、どのようにしてそれらを追い払ったらいいのか分からない。 When they find out that I don't smoke, drink, or take drugs, they take steps to get rid of me.  彼らは私がたばこ、酒、そしてドラッグもしないと分かると、私を排除しようとする行動に出る。

9 on the mend＝improving ,getting better, （事態、関係が）好転して、（病人が）快方に向かって。

例文 For a while, everyone thought that Mary and Sam were going to get a divorce. Now, however, Mary says their relationship is on the mend, and they are a lot happier together. しばらくの間、誰もがメリーとサムは離婚することになるだろうと思っていた。しかし、現在、メリーは言う、彼らの関係は好転し、二人ともより一層幸せだと。

10　help out （ちょっとの間、誰かを）手伝う

例文 Yesterday, my friend bought a new modem for his computer, but he couldn't install it, so I offered to help him out. 昨日,彼はコンピューターの新しいモデムを買ったが、彼は自分で取り付けられなかった、それで私は彼を手伝うと申し出た。 　　offer to help　助けたいという申し出る
