| ：ブレイクタイム：日常英会話よもやま話（１７年３月初旬記） この日常英会話表現を作るまでをご説明してみたいと思います。と言っても長々と書くほどのことでもないのですが。 題材はほとんど私が考えています。 想像力が乏しいのでほとんど身近にあったことに多少内容を変えたり、本で見たことを織り交ぜたり、と色々で、たまに本で読んだいくつかのストーリーを合わせて一回分の話にしていることもごくわずかにあります。 内容をほとんど変えず、まったく事実を書いているのはこの前後２回に分けたパソコン取替え顛末記とか、最初のころの”事故に遭った”や ”まだ注文の品物が届かないんだけど” ”花粉のシーズンがやってきた""私の変な犬”などがそうです。 大体混乱した話とかびっくりした内容なので、これらは内容を脚色する必要もなく、事実をありのままに書いただけです。 今回のパソコン取替え顛末記は細かく言えばもっと大変で色々とあったのですが、それを簡潔に言い表す表現力も気力もないのでこの辺にまとめてしまいました。これを訂正するデビッドは毎回私のこれらのオリジナル英語を読み、そして"please correct my following story"（次の私の話を訂正してください）につき合わされているわけです。分からなくなると”Is it correct?”(これでいいですか？）とか、文章を２つ書き、”which is correct?”（どっちが正しいですか？） とか、自分の英語の不安なところに？を付けたりと ？？がやたらに増えてきます。 最初の頃の”事故に遭った”は電話で話をしていた時にその話をしたのですがうまく言えず、それでも大分カッカしていたのでおそらくそれが伝わったのでしょうか、後からメールであなたの話をまとめてみたがおそらくこんな状況だったのだろうといって送ってきたのがまさにあの文章でした。わあよく分かったなと思い、後からもっとよく読んで勉強しようと思いコピーをとっておいたのがそのまま２年以上経ってしまい、後からちょうどいいタイミングで出てきたのです。ですからこの時は楽でした。文章を作る必要がなかったんですから。（この考えに問題アリですね） |

| I was involved in an accident on my way to my office by bicycle early this
morning. 今日の朝早く、自転車で会社に行く途中私は事故に巻き込まれた。 I was stopped at a cross street waiting for a green traffic light. 私は交差点で青信号を待っていた。 cross street 交差点 I was stopped at a cross street... be+過去分詞 文法上からいくと、この場合は I had stopped になるはずですが実際には I was stopped という言い方の方が多く使われるようです。 例文 The bus was stopped in front of the hotel.=The bus had stopped in front of the hotel. traffic light 交通信号 green traffic light 青信号 Suddenly a car bumped me as it was backing up. 突然、一台の車がバックしながら私にぶつかってきた。 bump 突き当たる ぶつける back up バックする 援助する I grabbed the handle bar very tightly, but I still was knocked down. 私はハンドルをしっかりとつかんだがそれでも倒されてしまった。 grab ひっつかむ handle bar （自転車の）ハンドル tightly しっかりと knock down 打ち倒す I scraped and bruised my hand, leg and cheek. 私は手と足と頬に打撲と擦り傷を負った。 scrape すりむく bruise 打撲傷を与える 傷つける My sholder also was sore because it was wrenched in the collision. 私はその衝突で肩をひねったので肩も痛かった。 sore 痛い、筋肉痛を起こした wrench ねじる、捻挫する、曲げる collision 衝突 The man driver was trying to back into the traffic lane, and didn't see me because he didn't look back correctly. その運転手はバックで道路に出ようとしていたが後ろをしっかりと見なかったので私がいることに気づかなかった。 traffic lane 走行車線 He got out of the car and just stood there offering no apology or care. 彼は車から出てきて、私に謝ることも気遣うこともせずただ立っていた。 get out of ~ ～から出る、降りる offer 提供する、申し出る apology 謝罪 I got his name and phone number, and rushed off to work. 私は彼の名前と電話番号を聞き、会社に急いだ。 rush 突進する、急ぐ My boss, hearing my situation, told me to go to the hospital soon. 私の上司は状況を聞いて、早く病院へ行くように言った。 I reported to the police before seeing a hospital. 私は病院へ行く前に警察に報告（この場合は電話で）した。 report 報告する、届け出る The police told me on the phone to come to the police office after seeing the hospital. 警察は午後に来るように私に言った。 When I telephoned to the driver to report to his insurance company, he didn't inquire about my condition. 私が運転手に彼の保険会社に連絡するように電話をしたとき、彼は私の体の状態についてなにも尋ねなかった。 inquire 尋ねる I got angry at his very impolite attitude then. 私はその時彼の失礼な態度に大変怒った。 get angry at（with)~ ～に対して怒る However, he apologized when we met at a police office again in the afternoon. しかし彼は警察で再び会ったときに謝ってきた。 His excuse was that he couldn't see me clearly because of the reflecting sunshine in the early morning and he didn't have any idea what happend then. 彼は朝日の光の反射で私をはっきりと見えなかったそしてその時何が起きたのかよく分からなかったと言い訳をしてきた。 reflect 反射する Now I have some time off to recover. 今私は治療のために数日間の休みを取った。 some time off = a few days of day off= a couple days of day off a few days 3,4 日 a couple of 2日 しかし実際には同じ意味に使われ、その日数は2日～4日の期間を指します。 AlsoI have one regular day off so I won't go to back to work untill Sunday. 私の通常の仕事休みも一日あるので、私は日曜日までは会社に戻らない。 day off (仕事が）休み The insurance company will settled with me. 保険会社は私に対して補償してくれるだろう。 settle with~ ～と和解する ～に（負債を）払う I'll buy a new bike, for which they will reimburse me when I send the receipt. 私は新しい自転車を買うつもりだ。それは私が領収書を送ればそれと引き換えに保険会社が支払うことになっている。 reimburse 弁償する 返済する |

company. How may I help you? こちらはＡＢＣ化粧品のお客様センターです。 どうなさいましたか？ どのようなご用件ですか？ May I help you ?=How may I help you? Customer: I bought 2 cosmetics of your company on the phone and the woman whom I talked with the other day said that they would reach to me after a week by parcel delivery service. However, although it has already passed ８ days, they haven't been delivered yet. What happened ? 私は電話であなたの会社から２つ化粧品を買ったんですけど、その時私とお話した方は宅配便で一週間後に届きますと言ったんです。でももうすでに８日間過ぎてますけど、いまだに届きません。一体どうしたんでしょうか？ parcel delivery service 宅配便 What happened ? 何があったんですか？ Operator: I'm sorry but I will find out the reason, so please wait a moment on hold. 申し訳ありません。今調べて見ますので、電話を切らずに少しお待ちください。 find out 調べる 見つける on hold 電話を切らずに（電話口で） 例 hold on please。 そのままお待ちください。 Customer: All right. 分かりました。 ** After in a few minutes**（２、3分後に） Operator: Thank you for waiting. I found out about it. I'm sorry the person who recieved your order on that day didn't explain that it needed 10 days especially because of having 3 days of public holidays during the term. New York City. 葉子は空港のゲートでニューヨークからくるお客を待っていた。 The guest was a man whose name is Tom Anderson and he was invited from Yoko' s company. そのお客はトムアンダーソンといって彼は葉子の会社から招かれていた。 Yoko didn't know his face and she had heard about him only that his name is Tom with glasses, brown hair, blue eyes and his age was 50 years old. 葉子は彼の顔を知らなかったし彼についてはトムという名前でメガネをかけて茶色の髪にブルーの目と年齢が５０歳であると言うことしか聞いていなかった。 Yoko found a man who was coming in her direction. 葉子は彼女の方に歩いてくる一人の男性を見つけた。 in her direction 彼女の方向に The man fitted with the description very much. その男性はその条件にちょうどピッタリだった。 description 記述, 描写; 説明書; 人相書き; 特徴 She spoke to him as he was approaching. 彼女は彼が近づいてきたときに声をかけた。 Yoko " Hello Mr.Tom. I have been waiting for you 葉子： こんにちは、トム。お待ちしておりました。 The man "Tom? who?" 男性：トム？誰？ Yoko " Oh! I'm very sorry. I mistook you for Mr Tom" 葉子：あっ！ごめんなさいトムと間違えました。 mistake you for ~ あなたを～と間違える。 mistake A for B ＡをＢと間違える。 The man" That's all right. Masao and Yoshiko are friends and they are sitting in Yoshiko's house, complaining about the recent heat. 正雄と良子は友達です。そして彼らは良子の家で最近の暑さに文句を言っています。 Masao: Oh! It has been very hot, every day. あぁ、毎日暑い日が続くなあ Yoshiko: Yes,（ it ）sure. How high is the temperature now? ほんとー。今何度あるの？ Masao: Thirty-two degrees now. Especially, yesterday night, I hardly slept all night with this terrible heat. いや。最近はまったくよく眠れないんだ。 特に昨晩はこのひどい暑さで一晩中ほとんど眠れなかったよ。 Yoshiko: Oh! it's very bad for your health. Don't you use an air conditioner? まあ、それは身体に悪いわ。 エアコンは使わないの？ Masao: No, I don't have an air conditioner because I must save money as much as I can for going to school abroad in the near future. いや、エアコンは持っていないんだ。近い将来、留学したいからできるだけお金をためなきゃならないからね。 Yoshiko: Oh! you are in a difficult situation. まあ、大変なのね。 Masao: It's can not be helped. I don't want to waste money even a little. 仕方がないよ。少しでも無駄遣いはしたくないんだ。 Yoshiko: OK. I've just remembered now that I have an extra air conditioner in my house. Although it is quite an old type which attaches in a window, would you like it? あー私今思い出したわ。私の家に余分なエアコンがあるのを。かなり古い窓に取り付けるタイプのものだけど、それでもいい？ quite かなり、すっかり、全く、実際（quiet と間違えやすいスペル） quite an old type 結構古いタイプ Masao: Oh! thank you. You look like you are feeling down, What happened? どうして？ あなた落ち込んでいるみたいね。どうしたの？ Keiko: Well....I want to quit my job if I can. うーん、 私、もしできたら今の仕事辞めたいわ。 Alis: How come? What's wrong? どうして？ 何があったの？ Keiko: I don't get along with my boss recently. 最近上司とうまくいかないのよ。 get along with ~～とうまくやってい行く Alis: Oh! Is it about Miss Yamamoto? You better not care about her so much because she is very known by her picky and selfish character in this office. あら、それ山本さんのこと？ 彼女のことはあまり気にしないほうがいいわよ。 この会社じゃ彼女はえこひいきが強くて自分本位な性格でよく知られているんだから。 be known by ~ ～でよく知られている Keiko: However, I must work under her every day, it is very severe. Also today, she scolded me about the document which I handed in this morning. でも、私はこれからも彼女の下で働かなければならないから厳しいわ。 今日も、彼女は今朝渡した書類のことで怒ったのよ。 Well, there was surely a little mistake, but it is not such a serious problem that I must be scolded so strongly. たしかに、少しミスはあったけど、そんなに強く怒られるほど重大な問題じゃないのに。 Alis: The boss has a very short temper. Keiko, I don't know what to say to comfort you, but cheer up! It is the most unfortunate she is in the position over you because there is a conflict of personalities あなたの上司は短気だからね。恵子、どうやってなぐさめたらいいのか分からないけど、元気出してよ。彼女があなたの上司でいることが一番の不運よね。相性が悪いのよ。 short temper 短気 癇癪もち conflict of personalities 個性の衝突＝＞相性が悪い Keiko: I think so, too. I have just watched a good program on TV now. いいえ、そんなに忙しくないわよ。今ちょうどテレビでいいのをやっていたから見てたのよ。 正子:Oh! I'm sorry. I hope I didn't disturb you. あら、ごめんなさい。邪魔しちゃったかしら。 キャシー:No, it's no problem. I have watched almost all of it. いいえ、そんなことないわよ。殆ど見終わったとこだったから。 正子: That's good. Well, I have a favor to ask of you. 正子:I want you to teach me how to use EXCEL of PC. I know about how to use WORD a little but I don't know about Excel at all. But my boss at my office requires me to make a schedule list of work. パソコンのエクセルの使い方を教えてほしいの。ワードについては少し知っているんだけど、エクセルは全く知らないのよ。
キャシー:All right. I don't mind I will go to your house right now if you like.だけど、会社の上司に勤務の予定表をエクセルで作るように要求されているの。 分かったわ。もしあなたがよければ、今すぐあなたの家に行ってもいいわよ。 正子: Oh! thank you. I appreciate this favor very much. Of course it is OK right now. So, I am waiting for you at home. わぁ、ありがとう。ほんとに感謝するわ。もちろん、今すぐで大丈夫よ。 では、家で待っているわね。 キャシー: OK see you later. 分かったわ。では又後でね。 正子: Bye now. じゃあね。 |

He called to the center and asked for help with his car's flat tire. ***
Operator: This is JIO support centor. How may I help you?オペレーター：ＪＩＯサポートセンターです。どうなさいましたか？ 正雄：タイヤがパンクしたんです。何とかしてください。 オペレーター：スペアタイヤは持っていますか？
はい、持っています、でも取り付ける道具がないんです。 install 取り付ける install it up しっかりと取り付ける オペレーター：分かりました。誰かをそちらに行かせます。それで、私たちは正確な場所を知りたいのであなたの現在いる場所を説明してもらえますか？ 正雄：分かりました。私は日野市のＪＲの豊田駅の近くで徒歩で駅まで８分ぐらいの所にいます。 オペレーター：あなたの近くに何か目印はありますか？ 反対側の道路に大野屋という大きなスーパーマーケットがあります。そして、私の車はタクシー乗り場のそばにいます。車は赤です。 オペレーター：分かりました。おそらく３０分以内に到着するでしょう。

Did you enjoy yourself? おはよう、リサ。昨日の忘年会どうだった？楽しかった？ How did ~ go? ～はどうだった？ 沢山あるgoの使い方の一つで出来事のの成り行きを表現します。 例文 The day went pleasantly enough until I received your call その日はお前の電話を受け取るまではとても楽しくいってたんだ。 Risa: Yes, I had a pretty good time. ええ、結構楽しかったわよ。 Yoko: Oh! That's great. | I changed my broken PC to new one from this early January. 私は今年の一月の始め頃に壊れたパソコンを新しい物に替えた。 My former PC had began breaking up since last November. 古いパソコンは昨年の１１月から壊れてきていた。 Although I wanted to format it earlier , I felt very much troubled because I must back up a lot of softs and important files before doing it. 私はもっと早くにそれを初期化したかったが、とても面倒に感じていた、その前に沢山のソフトや大事なファイルをその前にバックアップしなければならないので。 I have no idea how I should do it. 私はそれをどのようにしてやったらいいのか分からなかった。 So, I went out shopping for a new PC at the nearest electric store in early January. それで私は新しいパソコンを買うために一月初めの頃、近くの電器店に出かけた。 The electric store is very big and I couldn't find the PC department easily. その電器店は大変に大きくてわたしはパソコン売り場を簡単に見つけられなかった。 I aked one salesclerk who was approaching me. 私は近づいてきた店員に聞いた。 salesclerk:How may I help you? 何でしょうか？ I: Excuse me, where can I get to the PC department? すみません、パソコン売り場はどこですか？ salesclerk: It's beyond this music department and off to the right. この音楽売り場の向こうの右手奥にあります。 I: Thank you. ありがとう。 I was walking around checking and comparing the price and the design each model. 私はそれぞれの機種の値段やデザインを見て比較しながら、ぶらぶらと歩いた。 However, every PC was more expencieve than I expected. しかし、どのパソコンもおもったよりも大分高かった。 But I found one special price one. でも私はひとつ特別価格のものを見つけた It was sold as a set of 3 items which were PC, degital camera and copy machine as a new year's special sale. それは新年の特別セールとして、パソコン、デジタルカメラ、そしてコピー機の３点セットで売られていたものだった。 And the price was just 100,000 yen. そして値段はちょうど１０万円だった。 Wow!, it is very luck for me. おー私ってラッキー I beckoned to a salesclerk aproaching me. 私は店員にこちらに来るように合図した。 I:Excuse me, how come this PC set is so cheap? すみません、このパソコンセットはなぜこんなに安いんでしょうか？ salesclerk: This one has not been installed with some softs like Words and Excel. Do you have those softs? And further this PC's maker is not known well in Japan but it is very popular brand in America. | It is said this year's pollen count level is 30 times higher than the normal

Hello,This is Masako. It's been a long time. あら、こんにちわ、正子よ。久しぶりね。 How are you doing? どうしている？ Keiko:Just busy as usual. How about you? 相変わらず忙しいわよ。 あなたはどお？ Masako: Oh! I'm so busy I could die． もう忙しくて死にそう。 I'm so busy I could die．忙しくて死にそうだ。 注この could は「～かもしれない」 の意味を持ち確信度はmight と同じで弱い言い方の時に使います。 Keiko: Ah! What happened? まあ！どうしたの？ Masako: You remember I told you about my studying abroad during all last year. 私が去年ずーと留学していたことについて話したの覚えているでしょ？ And the daughter of that host house is traveling alone in Japan since 2 weeks ago. それでその時のホストの娘が2週間前から今一人で日本を旅行しているの。 I was supposed to guide her from this Saturday to this comingTuesday for 4days, around Tokyo. 私はこの土曜日から今度の火曜日まで４日間東京周辺で彼女をガイドすることになっていたのよ。 be supposed to ～ ～することになっている。 ＜例文＞ The children are supposed to be at school by 8.45 a.m. 子供達は朝８時４５分までに学校に来ていることになっている。 What are you doing out of bed - you're supposed to be asleep. ベッドから離れて何しているの？ あなたは寝ているはずでしょ。 You're not supposed (= allowed) to park here. あなたはここで駐車してはいけないことになっています。 So, I took 2 unscheduled days off Monday and Tuesday. だから月曜日と火曜日の2日間、臨時で休みを取ったの。 But my work schedule has changed suddenly and now I have to attend a trainning for my work this Saturday. でも仕事のスケヂュールが突然変わって、今週の土曜日は仕事の研修にでなくてはならないのよ。 So, I am calling you because I want to ask you a faver . Keiko: Oh! I wonder if I can handle such a responsibility. まあ、でもそんな責任あること私がやれるかしら？ handle この場合のhandle は 対処する、扱う、 などの意味になります。 Masako: You're all right. I'm sure you will be just fine as a guide. Your english conversation is better than you think. あなたは大丈夫よ。私はガイドとしてきっと上手くいくと確信しているわ。あなたの英語はあなたが思っている以上にいいわよ。 Keiko:Um......... I have no confidence at all but you seem in a difficult situation ウーン、私は全く自信ないのよ、でもあなたは困っているようだし。 Masako: Yes, I sure am, and I need your help. I will guide her for you this Saturday. 分かったわ、今度の土曜日は貴方に変わって私がガイドをするわ。 Masako: Thank you, you saved my life. ありがとう、貴方のおかげで助かったわ。 save one's life. 文字通り、命を助けるという意味のほかに難しい状況から脱するのを助けたという表現に使います。 例文 Thanks for helping me with that report - you saved my life! レポートを手伝ってくれてありがとう。助かったわ。 Keiko: That may be rather good for my English coversation. I have no chance to talk with foreigner actually. むしろ私の英会話の勉強にはいいかもしれないわ。 私は実際に外国人と話をする機会がないから。 Masako:I am glad you think so. そう思ってくれると嬉しいわ。 Keiko: There is never enough time to do the things we like. 善は急げね。 Oh! I will be so busy preparing to guide her. Because our range of travel is not so far ,so it depends on the total fee of today's schedule. Probably, we will not use the train and subway enough to warrant the cost of the free passport ticket in Tokyo. ええ、ここで買えると思うわ。でも買った方がいいかどうかは分からないわよ。 どうしてかって言うと私達の移動する範囲はそんなに遠くないし、今日の予定の全体の料金次第ね。 おそらく、私達は東京内の乗車パス券の料金に見合うほど電車や地下鉄は使わないと思うの。 Susan: OK . I got it. そうね、分かったわ。
Keiko:Please come this way for the ticket counter. Oh! it is 150 yen to Ikebukuro on JR line. 切符売り場はこっちよ。あら、JR線で池袋まで１５０円だわ。 この場合の for は”～に向かって（toward)” になり、これから向かうところなので for となりますね。 この辺については 単語帳の 「前置詞」 の ”for ” のところで説明（to と for の違い）してあります。 We went to the platform for Ikebukuro walking up some stairs in the station and got on the train. 私達は駅の階段を登って池袋行きのホームに行った、そして電車に乗り込んだ。 walk up 階上に歩いて上がる ～に歩いていく（近づく） Keiko: We will reach Ikebukuro in only 5 minutes. 池袋にはたったの５分で着くわよ。 Susan:Oh! it's very near. How many stops are there before Ikebuluro? まぁ、 とっても近いのね。池袋駅までいくつ止まるの？ Keiko: There are 3 more stops before Ikebukur. Next stop is Shinokubo, Takadanobaba, Mejiro and Ikebukuro. 池袋までは3つよ。次の停車駅は新大久保で、高田馬場、目白、そして池袋よ。 Susan:I see. I am surprised Japanese transportation's ticket gates are all on automatic . 分かったわ。 私日本の乗り物の改札口って全部自動なのでビックリしたわ。
Keiko:Yes, I think nowadays most stations use automatic gates in Japan. But isn't it the same in Canada? そうね、近頃はほとんどの駅は日本では自動改札を使っているわね。でもそれはカナダでも同じじゃないの？ Susan: No, only in big city's like Vancouver and Toronto, ticket gates are automatic . But other ticket gates are still manned by station employees . いいえ、 大きな都市だけよ、バンクーバーやトロントのような、改札口が自動なのは。でも他の改札口はいまだに駅員の人がやっているのよ。
Keiko: Oh! It's amazing. I thought Canada was the same as Japan. わぁ、驚きだわ、私カナダも日本と同じだと思っていた。 Susan: No, Japanese transportation's system is more advanced than Canada. いいえ、日本の乗り物のシステムはカナダよりもっと進んでいるわよ。 Keiko:But You can have a long vacation such as this trip. Keiko: Oh! It's gorgeous! We can not have such a long vacation. Most Japanese workers can have only around one week at the most for summer vacation. We arrived at Ikebukuro station and we got to the east entrance
There was a long line of many people at a small stand. 私たちは池袋駅に着き、東口に出た。小さな売店に沢山の人の長い列があった。 Susan: What is that line? あの行列はなに？ Keiko: Oh! it is a line for buying a lottery ticket. Japanese lottery's highest prize is 300,000,000 yen, it is about 2,500,000 (2.5 milion ） dollar. How about your country? あぁ、あれは宝くじの券をを飼う人達の列よ。 日本の宝くじの一番高い賞金は３億円で、それは約２５0万ドルになるわね。 あなたの国ではどお？ Susan: the highest prize in Canada is 30 ,000,000 (30 million) dollars. 一番高い賞金はカナダでは3000万ドルよ。 Keiko:Wow, it is more than 10 times the Japanese prize?.
