Around year 1336, was a time when paper still has not spreaed in Japan, priests and officers writen there epistle or correcepondance on the stiched slip of wood which became the origin of Sensu/Folding fan little later.
This time, Sensu has called HI-OUGI / O, bedause it stiched with 20 or 25 pcs of slice cutted HINOKI / O which a hard wood grows only in Japan.
This HI-OUGI had chelish among the noblewoman, but unpopulered because hard HI-OUGI was very convenient to protect her face from cold wind in winter, but it is so heavy to fan her face in a hot summer day.
One day, one of HI-OUGI craftman had required from one of novleman to produce a useful OUGI to make comfortabl fan in a hot summer day.
The craftman had make up a one of epoch-making OUGI after suveral attempts.
He mounted a Japanese paper /WASHI on to the slice cuted bamboo.
The weight of Washi and Bamboo are so light than HINOKI, and also, they have much of strength than HINOKI by far, so it better to make a light weight OHGI to fan. SENSU can be said to be collapsible Uchiwa.
SENSU had export to EUROPE via CHINA in around year 1800.

MURASAKI-SHIKIBU have a white color HI-OUGI in her hand
In addition to being used to create breezes and refreshment or ornament on the wall , SENSU are indispensable props for classical Japanese dance and for comic story telling.
Because the shape of the unfolded fan is "broadening toward the end" symbolizing rising prosperity, it is also used as prop for celebrations or as a memento.

We can enjoy the varied color and patern of SENSU and UCHIWA.
